Our Family History

Boyd Seed Farms, Inc. is built on generations of farming in South Central Kansas, with roots that trace back to the late 1800s. George and Gesine Morisse emigrated from Germany to Kingman County, Kansas, where they began farming and established the foundation for what would become a multi-generational operation.

In 1908, Benjamin Franklin House married Emma Bertha Morisse and the two established a homestead six miles southwest of Isabel, Kansas, a place that remains central to the operation today. Ben and Emma raised crops and livestock while building a life centered around agriculture and family, raising four children: Clarence “Jake,” Leo, Franklin, and Edna.

Their daughter Edna later married Ivan F. Boyd in 1946. Ivan, a World War II Air Force mechanic who served in the European Theatre, returned home to continue a life in agriculture. In 1959, Ivan and Edna moved to the original House homestead, where they raised wheat, cattle, hogs, and horses. Alongside the farm, Edna dedicated her career to education while raising their three children: Linda, Calvin, and Darrel.

Calvin Boyd, born in 1953, grew up working on the family operation and continued that legacy after marrying Carla Schepmann in 1978. In 1984, Calvin and Carla moved to the farmstead, where they raised cattle and crops while continuing to build the operation. In 1998, Calvin expanded the farm by introducing center pivot irrigation, and in the early 2000s, adopted no-till practices. These advancements allowed the operation to diversify beyond traditional wheat into crops like corn, soybeans, milo, and cotton.

Chris Boyd returned to the family farm after graduating from Kansas State University in 2008. In 2014, he married Chelsea Cunningham, and together they moved into the original homestead, becoming the fifth generation to farm the land in South Central Kansas.
